World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. It is estimated that one in ten older adults have experienced elder abuse. It is on people of all ages to address this issue, which can take many different forms. Elder abuse is not always easy to spot. Some types of elder abuse include:

  • Neglect or isolation

  • Financial exploitation

  • Physical abuse

  • Emotional abuse

The signs of elder abuse vary, and can include:

  • Unexplained bruises

  • Abrupt changes in weight

  • Unsanitary living environment

  • Withdrawal from friends, family, or usual activities

  • Sudden change in financial status

It is important to check in on your older friends, family members, and neighbors often. If you are worried about a loved one, visit the Eldercare Locator at eldercare.acl.gov.
