Seabury wins nationally competitive AARP award to connect seniors to resources through transportation.

Washington, DC. Seabury announces today a $16,500 award from AARP to support increased transportation for seniors in the community to access resources.

The Community Challenge grant program makes communities more livable for people of all ages with tangible improvements that jump-start long-term change.

In its 8th year, AARP is providing the largest number of Community Challenge grants to date, investing more than $3.8 million among 343 grantees across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

“AARP DC is proud to have Seabury Resources for Aging here in the District.” Says Louis Davis, AARP DC State Director. “I am confident that the older adults, and older blind residents in Ward 5 who are touched by this project, will experience easier and healthier living as a result.”

Seabury has long understood that it doesn’t matter how good the resources are – if people can’t access them, they are no help at all. For the next six months, Seabury will be providing expanding round trip bus transportation to seniors in the Ward 5 community of DC to bring them to Model Cities Senior Wellness Center, with an additional trip in the middle of the day to a separate community resource.

"I am grateful to AARP DC for our ongoing partnership and their continued support of our shared mission to provide essential services to older adults that will enhance the quality of their lives,” says Dawn Quattlebaum, Seabury Resources for Aging CEO. “ AARP's grant support is addressing a major transportation need to

the members of Model Cities Senior Wellness Center that will allow increased participation in programs that combat social isolation and food insecurity."

This project providing increased transportation is a model for the District to follow and support. While the District has long supported transportation, it is the #1 resource aging service providers ask the Council to invest more in. Our city’s eldest members sometimes needs “couch to couch” transportation service that is senior focused, and connects them to grocery stores and other critical services.
