Seabury Celebrates Pride
Here at Seabury, we are always proud to celebrate the diversity of older adults. Our Out & About program has been serving LGBTQ older adults since 2018, creating a community where all are welcome to be who they are and connect with peers.
A 2020 report by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine found that LGBTQ populations “tend to have more loneliness than their heterosexual peers because of stigma, discrimination, and barriers to care.” The report also found that loneliness is associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and even physical health problems.
Our year-round events and gatherings for LGBTQ older adults have helped people like Frank* create lasting connections. Frank struggled with clinical depression and feelings of isolation all his life, but getting more comfortable with his sexuality helped him deepen his relationships with family and friends. Read more about Frank here.
Mel found a different type of connection through Out & About. After his husband passed away, Mel started attending Out & About events to stay engaged and find a social circle. At Seabury’s Great Gatsby event, Mel met someone new and quickly learned that they had a lot in common. They started dating and now plan to move in together. “We’re so lucky we have met each other,” he says. “That’s why Out & About is so wonderful… It brings people together who might not otherwise ever meet each other.” Read Mel's story here.
We hope that everyone enjoys a wonderful Pride Month. Know that Seabury is here to help you and your loved ones age with independence, dignity, and pride all year long.
