Friendship Terrace Adds 125 Deeply Affordable Senior Housing Units in Tenleytown

Seabury Resources for Aging Establishes $2M Food Trust to Support Residents

For Immediate Release

February 11, 2025

Washington, DC – Seabury Resources for Aging welcomed the community to an open house at Friendship Terrace, a senior living community that recently converted 125 units into deeply affordable housing. The residential property, located at 4201 Butterworth Place NW in Washington, DC’s Tenleytown neighborhood, has also established a $2 million Food Trust -- ensuring Seabury at Friendship Terrace offers stable, affordable homes and access to delicious, nutritious food for Ward 3’s senior community.

Families, caregivers, older adults and more community members joined Seabury on Thursday for an Open House to explore the unique transit-adjacent, deeply affordable senior living community, where deeply affordable housing, affordable meals, and inclusive community come together to showcase what aging with independence and dignity mean in 2025.

Dawn Quattlebaum, CEO of Seabury Resources for Aging, expressed her passion for the initiative, “At Seabury, we believe that every senior deserves a fulfilling and enriching living experience. Our open house at Friendship Terrace provides a wonderful opportunity for the community to witness firsthand how we champion

our residents’ well-being, especially during a time when deeply affordable senior housing is increasingly scarce.”

Access to affordable senior housing remains a pressing concern in Washington, DC. Alarmingly, nearly 30% of seniors in the Washington, DC area grapple with housing instability, with only 15% of available housing options deemed affordable for those on fixed incomes. Additionally, the Capital Area Food Bank reports that

almost one in two seniors (42%) in DC experience food insecurity.

Friendship Terrace is dedicated to addressing these challenges by providing a new $2M Food Trust supporting sliding scale meal subsidies to residents and 125 units of newly deeply affordable housing (30% or less of Area Median Income), which are subsidized by project-based vouchers administers by the DC Housing Authority

(DCHA).

Ward 3 Councilmember Matt Frumin: "The [$2M] Food Trust is the cherry on top for this project. Food security is so critical - the number of seniors living with food insecurity is a tragedy, and you are taking a big step addressing that here."

"Our seniors are the backbone of our community. Through their hard work over the course of their lives, they helped support future generations. With Friendship Terrace, we are supporting them,“ said Keith Pettigrew, DCHA Executive Director. “Friendship Terrace as a community that provides seniors with an opportunity to age with independence and dignity. Thank you to Seabury and the Friendship Terrace residents for your partnership and thank you to Councilmember Frumin and the Tenleytown community for your support.”

“Friendship Terrace represents a crucial step forward in addressing the urgent need to provide access to affordable housing and food for seniors in Ward 3 and across the District. Efforts like the Friendship Terrace project by groups like Seabury Resources for Aging show a commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive community for all generations,” said, Councilmember Matt Frumin.
